Scott Hawley Appointed to National Science Foundation Advisory Board Kansas City, Mo. (Oct. 9, 2006) – Scott Hawley, Ph.D., Investigator, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee for Biological Sciences of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Congress established the NSF in 1950 “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity and welfare; and to secure the national defense.” NSF funds the people, ideas, and tools to boost U.S. leadership in all aspects of science, mathematics, and engineering research and education. The Advisory Committee for Biological Sciences confers with the Director of the NSF on such issues as: The Advisory Committee meets twice a year. Members represent a cross section of biology with representatives from many different subdisciplines within the field; a cross section of institutions, including industry; broad geographic representation; and balanced representation of women and under-represented minorities. “The Biological Sciences Advisory Committee plays a pivotal role in American science, and it is a well-deserved honor for Dr. Hawley to be among the elite scientists invited to participate,” said Dr. William Neaves, President and CEO. “Dr. Hawley is an excellent choice for this role because of his extraordinary abilities as laboratory researcher, gifted teacher, and articulate communicator.” In addition to his appointment at the Stowers Institute, Dr. Hawley holds the prestigious appointment of American Cancer Society Research Professor. He is also Professor of Physiology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
