Hallmark Executive Named Stowers Institute Chief Financial Officer

Kansas City, Mo. (Dec. 18, 2006) – Roderick Sturgeon, Senior Vice President – Personal Expression Group Finance at Hallmark Cards, Inc., has been named Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer for the Stowers Institute for Medical Research and its affiliated entities.

     Mr. Sturgeon, whose hiring was the culmination of an 18-month search, will report to the Institute’s Board of Directors. He will assume responsibility for all financial operations beginning on Feb. 1, 2007.

     “The Board feels very fortunate to have Rod Sturgeon as our CFO,” said Richard W. Brown, Co-Chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors, “He is a trusted financial executive with extensive insight into the governance and management of a multi-billion dollar privately held organization.”

     Mr. Sturgeon joined Hallmark in 1974 as a Financial Analyst and has held various positions, including Manager of Budgets and Financial Planning, Hallmark Marketing Administrative Manager, Assistant Controller, Ambassador Planning and Administration Director, and General Manager for Ambassador Specialty Products. He was Vice President of Finance and Planning for Hallmark International prior to assuming his current position and being named a corporate officer in 1993.

Neaves, President and CEO. “As the Institute and its endowments expand, the expertise that Rod brings will be increasingly important.”

     Mr. Sturgeon received his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and his M.B.A. from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. He serves on the Kansas State University Business College Advisory Board and Community National Bank Board.
